Pelon’s Mexican Hot Dogs

Pelon’s Mexican Hot Dogs is both a freestanding carry out restaurant and a food truck. The restaurant is located at 1506 Verot School Rd. There is a great story on their website describing how the idea for the restaurant came about.

I have sampled items from their food truck on two occasions. I have to preface this review with a quick statement that any one who knows me already knows. I do not like hot dogs. I have never liked hot dogs. Now based on that fact, you may find this review interesting. These hot dogs are the first that I can honestly say I really like. For the first time ever, I actually crave these hot dogs.

All of their hot dogs are turkey hot dogs that are wrapped in bacon then deep fried. From there, they have many different ways that you can have your hot dog. The menu for the food truck is a condensed version of what is offered at the restaurant. The soup that is offered each day seems to change, and on occasion they offer specials. The special for the upcoming Food Truck Round Up is the Ragin Cajun Dog which is topped with queso, cayenne pico de gallo, and a spicy mayo sauce. YUM! To find their specials, check out their Facebook page.

I have had the fajita hot dog and the fresh garlic chips and melted queso.

The fajita dog is served on a flour tortilla and consists of the turkey hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep fried topped with green and yellow bell peppers, onions, and Mexican sour cream. I was lucky enough to get a lagniappe serving of pico de gallo on top of my fajita dog. The hot dog was juicy, the bacon wasn’t too crunchy and not too chewy, and the toppings added great flavor. The pico de gallo added an excellent kick to the hot dog.

The fresh garlic chips and melted queso are exactly what the name describes. The chips are flour tortilla chips that are fluffy, light, and flavorful. The queso is creamy and delicious.

The only drawback to Pelon’s Mexican Hot Dogs is that price. It is hard to think of a hot dog as being a gourmet type food, but these are not your average hot dogs. These hot dogs are going to run you from $2.99-$3.99 per hot dog. Extra toppings are all an extra price, and the sides range from $2.99- $4.99 based on what size you want. Personally, I only eat one hot dog normally, so the price doesn’t bother me. I can understand how some might be put off by such an expensive hot dog. They do offer combo deals (I think only at the restaurant) that lower the prices slightly.

So in conclusion, I have to say that the Mexican hot dog won me over. The hot dog was tasty, the toppings were flavorful, and the service at the food truck was excellent. If you are in the mood for a good hot dog, either track down the food truck or visit the restaurant.

It’s still less than a plain hot dog at Disney World! 🙂
